Block Letter Style

The identifying feature of the block style letter is the left justification of all structural parts of the letter except the dateline, complimentary close, and the signature line. The dateline is right-justified. The complimentary close and the signature line are typed to the right of the horizontal center of the page.

Block Letter Parts

Note the placement of each of the parts is at the left margin. If you have a letterhead with the return street address, city and state you do not have to include your sender's information again at the left margin.

Sometimes the placement of the date varies with the letterhead style.

The block letter style is available for your review in printable form in a pdf (portable document format) file here: Block letter format.

See the letters introduction page for other resources.
